Just as The Muppet Show fiddled with the formula of television, The Muppet Movie has a field day with a bevy of cinematic tropes, playing fast and loose with genres from the musical to the road movie to the romance to the spy thriller. Along the way, he meets the Muppets, and together they journey to Hollywood to achieve their dreams, all the while pursued by Doc Hopper, a Colonel Sanders-esque fast food magnate who wants to make Kermit the poster boy for his new line of frog leg restaurants. The plot is simple – Kermit leaves his swamp to pursue a career as an entertainer. It’s one of those joyous films so high on its powers to delight that it still is completely irresistible. There are now eight films featuring the Muppets, and while all but one have their merits, there will probably never be one as great as The Muppet Movie. It’s a credit to Henson, Frank Oz, and director James Frawley that all this technical wizardry is completely overshadowed by how much of a riotously good time the film really is. But there’s also overhead cranes with marionette strings, remote controlled animatronics, and traditional hand puppetry. There are innumerable puppetry methods employed throughout the film Henson is under that mossy log in a diving bell, controlling Kermit from underwater, for instance. Henson achieves all that in the first ten minutes, culminating with that iconic mind-fuck – Kermit riding a bicycle. By 1979, no film had ever placed puppet characters in real locations, let alone shooting them head-to-toe in action. The Muppet Movie is rarely thought of as groundbreaking cinema, but it should be. Although it had a tough time getting off the ground, by the third season the Muppets were the biggest thing in entertainment, and thus the movie was born.

And all this was presided over by a maddeningly stressed-out Kermit and a series of guest stars, from Steve Martin to Diana Ross to Elton John. A bear did stand-up, chickens played piano, a Swedish chef attempted to explain the finer elements of cooking, and two old men heckled from the audience. The Muppet Show was unlike anything that had ever been on television, an anarchic mashup of Howdy-Doody and Your Show of Shows that mixed variety performances, pop culture parodies, and sketch comedy into an utterly unique half hour of entertainment. More Muppets, a term coined to marry the words “marionette” and “puppet,” followed Kermit, soon movin’ right along to 1969’s debut of Sesame Street and then, in 1976, The Muppet Show. That program was a trailblazer, the first to bring puppets outside of a proscenium arch and into the context of a practical television set. Jim Henson first debuted Kermit on the television program Sam and Friends in 1955. By the time he’s finished singing about “the lovers, the dreamers, and me,” he’s as real as anything we’ve ever seen at the movies. It’s not until we touch down in a swamp, dollying through its waters, that we lay eyes on him – Kermit the Frog, sitting astride a mossy log, playing the banjo, and singing “The Rainbow Connection.”Įven now, it’s a shocker to see him in a wide shot, with no visible means of manipulation at first it’s hard to even distinguish the tiny felt hand puppet from his very realistic-looking surroundings, but that’s precisely the point. We hear him before we see him, that iconic voice, singing over a helicopter shot gliding through clouds and over a cluster of trees.

It’s one of the most splendid entrances in cinematic history.
